More and more British nationals are applying for Irish citizenship as a result of the Brexit referendum which took place Three years ago. In 2016, Ireland has accepted 568 Irish citizenship applications from Britons. And in the year 2017 the number grew even more with 860 applicants.
Last year, however, the number grew to an astonishing 1200. The trend sets to continue this year. We’re not even halfway through the year and Ireland has already received 600 applicants from Britons.
In order to get an Irish Passport, you first need to be an Irish citizen which is slightly different to the way the rest of the countries operate. In order to acquire an Irish citizenship, you must either be born in Ireland, married to an Irish, adopted by an Irish or through Naturalization. This is dependent on how long the person has lived in Ireland.
The reason why more and more people are turning to Irish nationality is due to the uncertainty attached to Britain and the Brexit. Most of them are working in Europe and do not want to return to to the UK. So their last savior is becoming Irish citizens. Even the Department of Foreign Affairs agrees that the reason for the spike is the uncertainty attached with the Brexit.
