This is a good time to start incorporating new, positive habits in your day-to-day life. Your goals and priorities may have changed since December, so take the time now to reset and realign with your goals.
According to Dr. Multz, it only takes a “minimum” of 21 days to form a new habit and adjust to the new situations. Start by incorporating these four healthy habits to quickly improve your life.
Plan for a Routine
Oftentimes, rushing through life leaves little time for one to enjoy peace and quiet. Whether it is early in the morning or before bed, developing a routine can help increase productivity throughout your day. Developing a morning and night routine is important to be as productive as possible during the day.
In order to create an effective routine, it may be helpful to take a step back and consider these factors:
- How much time do you have in the morning and night?
- What are your energy levels when you wake up and before you go to bed?
- What tasks are the most important and urgent that you need to get done for the day? (Pro tip: Focus on what is MOST important/urgent rather than consisting of every little thing that needs ‘to get done’ for that day.)What tasks can be allocated to someone else?
- How to best take advantage of the urgent priorities to make the most out of my day?
Once you understand your time constraints, necessary to-do items and how to best accomplish them, you can easily determine how to tackle your day.
Having a plan for your day is important, but so is implementing evening habits to set yourself up for success. It also helps minimize the stress of accomplishing all of your tasks. Consider the following:
Evening tidy up before you go to bed. A messy home wake up is not the most motivating way to start your day. Spend ten to twenty minutes each night before bed tidying up and you will notice a decrease in stress in the morning.
- Prepare for the next morning and establish your goals for the following day. This will help identify the most essential tasks in advance and minimize the amount of thinking you need to do when you wake up.
Plan to start your day by conquering the most challenging task that’s when the majority of the people have the biggest focal point.
Declutter
Our living environment is often a reflection of our habits, values and an inner reflection on our inner well-being. A Rubbermaid survey conducted by Russell Research reported that “91% of participants who were stressed, anxious and overwhelmed when their home is cluttered. “so stressed, anxious and overwhelmed when their homes are cluttered that they don’t even know where to begin with home organization.”
Clutter often accumulates when we avoid cleaning messy “hot spots” on a daily basis. SinceBecause clutter often attracts more clutter, these hot spots can quickly start off as small areas and grow into a bigger problem. From an unfinished home-project to an overflowing closet, start decluttering by choosing one “hot spot” to tackle first.
As you get into the habit of maintaining clutter-free spaces, your physical space and mind will be clearer for other projects and goals you want to complete.. For more decluttering habits check out Snail Pace Transformations.
Practice Gratitude
Perspective on life changes when you start to develop gratitude as a daily habit. The book Law of Attraction discusses the more gratitude you practice, the more things you’ll be grateful for. Research has demonstrated the many benefits of practicing gratitude. Gratitude leads to increased levels of happiness. Increased levels of happiness lead to more motivation and drive to achieve your goals. And achieving those goals, in turn, leads to increased levels of happiness.
When you acknowledge what you are grateful for, you start to focus on the positive side of things regularly which can help this mindset become second nature.
Here are some simple way to start practicing gratitude on a daily basis:
- Schedule time on a regular basis to make a list of three to five things you are thankful for.
- Practice telling others “thank you” or “I appreciate you” when they do something for you, no matter how small it is.
- Make a conscious effort to see the best in everyone even when others may have bitterness or negativity.
- Avoid letting anger, disappointment, failure, frustrations and fear become part of automatic reactions.
- Build gratitude with small daily, unexpected, undeserved acts of love, compassion and forgiveness for yourself and others.
Focus On The Solution Instead of the Problem
Time and energy are wasted on constant negative thoughts and can quickly lead to situations turning negative in response. You won’t solve a problem by complaining about it. Having the approach of solving the situation instead of complaining about it can immensely improve your life. It is a habit that is proven to improve people’s lives.
Start with acceptance “Okay, this happened.” Then ask yourself three questions when a ‘problem’ situation comes up:
- What can I learn from this so that it does not happen again?
- Which direction am I going to take from here?
- What are three positive things I can take away from this situation?
Don’t waste time attaching yourself to negative situations you cannot change. Think of them as learning experiences and move on. Create and maintain an optimistic outlook on what you have learned from the situation and what control you have over your actions and reactions.
Reach Your Goals
It can be tough to maintain habits in your life. It takes intention and discipline. The good thing about routines and habits is that the more you do them, the easier they become. Positive habits become ingrained in your day to the point where you find it harder to not do them. Stick with it although you may find it tedious in the beginning, the days that will follow will flow much more smoothly.
