Two capitals Moscow and Ankara agreed upon a deal on Tuesday about Syrian and Russian forces taking charge in Northeast Syria to remove Kurdish YPG fighters and their weapons. This agreement expands on a US-brokered truce that was about to expire on Tuesday. This deal means the return of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces to the border along with the Russian army. It will also remove Americans who have been patrolling the region for years.
The agreement was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The forces of both the countries will start removing the YPG 30 kilometers from the Turkish border. Later, Russian and Turkish forces will jointly start the patrol of 10 km strip of land in the safe zone.
Before signing the agreement, there were six hours of talks with Erdogan in the Black Sea resort of Sochi. Putin expressed his clearance on the decision he made. He finds it very important to resolve what tense situation is developing on the Syrian-Turkish border. This agreement is a World News in which everyone is taking an interest.
A senior Turkish official said that the agreement is an excellent deal that will achieve Turkey’s long-held goal of a border strip cleared of the YPG. Under the deal with Moscow, the length of the border, which the YPG is required to pull back from, is more than three times the size of the area covered by the US-Turkish accord. It covers most of the area that Turkey wanted to include.
