The US Air Force (USAF) has declared to launch its second next-generation Lockheed Martin-built Global Positioning System III (GPS III) in July 2019. Ever since it has arrived at Cape Canaveral in Florida, US, in the month of March, it is going through pre-launch processing and fuelling activities. The second GPS III satellite has been encapsulated by Lockheed Martin Space technicians by teaming up with United Launch Alliance (ULA) personnel. The satellite named “Magellan” has been planned to be launched with the help of a ULA Delta IV rocket on 25 July.
According to Lockheed Martin Navigation Systems vice-president Johnathon Caldwell, GPS III SV02 has been scheduled to launch just after the launch of the nation’s GPS III satellite. He added that their attempt is to launch more GPS III satellites in order to spread this new technology to every corner of the world. Caldwell also said that the world will see the launch of more GPS III space vehicles in the future.

The designing of GPS III satellites has been done to ensure three times better accuracy and up to eight times improved antijamming capabilities. And the target of the USAF is to embrace the GPS constellation with new technology and capabilities. Lockheed Martin has entered the partnership with USAF to build 10 GPS III satellites equipped with advanced features.
With the use of GPS in satellites, the navigation system would improve significantly which will help to provide astronauts the ability to get accurate results in their work. In daily life use, the importance of GPS has increased on a large scale as it is being used for various purposes. The online availability of GPS trackers has made it easier for people to choose the best products for them.
