Python 2.7 has reached to its end officially after a time-span of 20 years on 1 January 2020. There will not be any security updates, bug fixes, and other changes for Python 2.7 in the future. Python development team has asked the users to switch to Python 3 version that was released in the year 2006. Earlier it was decided to retire it in 2015 but the development team extended Python 2.7 closure date to 2020.
Python 2.7 came into existence in the year 2000 and it is used by developers, security professionals, and administrators from big organizations for the last 20 years. Although Python 3 was introduced in 2006, still, Python 2.7 had a high number of users which led the Python development team to work on both the tools. The decision has been taken to increase the speed of development as well as to focus on fixing bugs and offering more security for Python 3.
Python team is planning to release the final version of Python 2.7 in the April month of 2020 and it will include all the bugs as well as security fixes developed in 2019 in order to increase its stability. Although PyPy will be there for Python 2.7 even after 2020 and users can make use of it in their work.
