Living your dreams can be challenging especially if there is not much support. In Roman Perez’s story, his support came from the few. His parents and brother were rocking stones to believing in him. Growing up in a neighborhood where he was not respected and accepted, were obstacles he faced in his childhood and preteen years. Being bulled and constantly being looked at as a nobody, didn’t stop Roman from reaching his goals.
He started his basketball playing at a late age of 16 in which many would say, a late bloomer. But realizing his skill level was very low, this didn’t stop him from working hard daily. It was then at age 22, he played for his first College basketball team where he played for 2 seasons at Hostos CC and NY City Tech. His streetball credibility at Rodney Park which is his hometown court, earned the eyes of scouts in the Dominican Republic where he was offered to play professionally. Not hesitating on the decision, he went forward and started his professional career. Ups and downs along his way, he continued and up to date is a 12-year veteran.
Off the scenes he is the founder of the Dudo Baez foundation, which is named after his father who passed in 2014. The foundation provides inner city youth and adults to partake in camps, clinics and tournaments. It’s based in New York City and the Dominican Republic, currently growing in different parts of the world.
His story of true inspiration, the reason to why he is nicknamed “da Gift” which represents to many how Roman has been the gift to many on and off the court with his journey and love he gives back.
